Star Anise Noble House Spice

Illicium verum | Source: Long San, Vietnam | Harvested: July and December

  • We source our star anise from forest villages in Vietnam’s northern mountain region. Lang Son is the center of this region and is prized as the kingdom of star anise. Families from the surrounding villages forage the star anise flowers twice a year, in August and January.

We source directly from the foragers collecting the star anise and move to our facility in Quang Tri where we perform a hand sort to remove broken, malformed, discolored, and off-sizes. Star anise is very fragile and breaks easily.

Once sorted in Quang Tri, we ship to our facility in San Rafael, California where we perform a final sort to remove any broken pieces from transit to ensure bottle-ready product.

The result is three products we offer: sorted star anise, broken pieces, and larges. The broken pieces are an economical choice for grinding and blending. Please note, the larges are really beautiful full stars but do not fit into a standard 4 oz. spice jar.
